Radio Actuality (Redo)

Sunday February 26, was Oscar Night. “The Artist” a largely silent film set in 1920s Hollywood, won so many awards, including best picture, actor and director at the Academy Awards ceremony. “The Descendants” was the only one of the nine films nominated for best picture set in the present. “The Help” took place in the Jim Crow South. Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” was set in 1950 Texas — with an occasional flip back to the Dinosaur Age. The beginning of the night started with an introduction by Morgan Freeman who was later followed by Billy Crystal who was the host of the evening. He did his usual comic medley of movie moments, including a sketch with George Clooney in “The Descendants,” urging Mr. Crystal to host the show. Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for “The Iron Lady”.

Octavia Spencer won for Best Supporting actress in “The Help”. Paris, a junior student here at Kean University shared his thoughts about the Oscars….

(Audio)
"I was really happy when Octavia Spencer won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She reminded me of the girl Hattie McDaniels who won for “Gone with the Wind”.

Rachel, another junior student here at Kean University gave her thoughts about the 2012 Academy Awards…She said quote, "I really enjoyed the Oscars this year. I thought The Artist was definitely supposed to win for Best Picture, and Hugo for Best Director".

Since 1929, The Oscars continues to touch and inspire the hearts and lives of many human beings who tune in to watch their favorite celebrities have their names called and win their awards for all the hard work they have given. I wish the Academy Awards continued success for many years to come.

In Local News

In Trenton, NJ, Governor Christie’s plan to spend $300 million dollars less on Medicaid in this year has hit a dead end with the federal government saving $107 dollars in their budget. The Committees chairman Vincent Prieto stated that the plan is to establish deeper cuts that could hurt over 1.25 million poor and disabled people that depend on Medicaid for their own health care and housing benefits.

Last year in October the Obama administration refused to accept the state’s request for $107.3 million dollars, that would help pay for low-income people on Medicaid who were turned down for disability insurance. Spokesperson Nicole Brossoie, for the State Department of Human Services, feels that the impact of it all is unclear to her. New Jersey is now rethinking the strategy on Medicaid when now federal revenues and costs for programs too expensive. Again, as of last year the National Governor’s Association wrote Kathleen Sebelius a letter asking her to repay state debts, but she responded by saying that she did not have the power to do so. Ray Castro addressed that the federal government was the cause of the whole problem, and by hopefully with the help of the congressional delegation, it can be fixed at the federal level.

In Sports

The New Jersey Devils ended their winning streak when they were beaten by the St. Louis Blues with the score 4-3. Apparently some Devils fan thought that the last score by the Blues would result in an overturn, but it was not the case, so it went to overtime. Down at Rutgers, the football team is in a jam. CBS sports reported that the Mountaineers are offering to pay the team $20 million dollars to join the Big 12 this fall, but this deal however is causing the team to rush completing their schedule.
